OUR MISSION

GorillaDogs is an organization dedicated to encouraging the enforcement of existing animal cruelty statutes through humane education and advocacy while providing support and assistance to victims of animal abuse in Austin, Texas and Travis County .

Day after day, we visited the shelter to see the abused animals. Nothing was being done.

The same faces showed up again and again. We took it upon ourselves to start investigating. We found out that the shelter and the police department were not investigating these cases or if they did attempt to go to a home to confiscate an abused animal the proper procedures were not followed, resulting in no charges made. Because of poor training and worse planning, the police did not follow through with the investigations and the animals had to be returned to their owners. The lucky ones were turned over to rescue or killed.

We took it upon ourselves as individuals to go to the city council and the animal advisory commission to put pressure on the police department to do what they were hired to do. It took a year, but the city council finally agreed to budget for another investigator and two civilians to work Animal Cruelty.

Hiring the animal cruelty officers was supposed to happen by September 2005 and as of yet no changes have occurred.

Update - Recently, Austin has hired 2 additional Animal Cruelty officers. We would like to thank the city for making this small, but important step toward making Austin a cuelty-free city.
