Forrest's Story

Forrest before

We would like to Thank Everyone who has supported our effort to help Forrest and bring Animal Abuse in Austin,  Texas  to the Public's eye.

URGENT! YES, THIS DOES HAPPEN IN AUSTIN

Update on Forrest!

When we first brought Forrest home from the hospital, things seemed pretty dreary.  He was blind and in a constant state of depression.  He was also very full of fear.  He would run into walls, get stuck in corners and yell for help.  Due to his brain damage it was impossible for him to make a right turn, therefore he would walk in counterclockwise circles for hours until he got so tired he would just lie down and fall asleep.  He refused to drink water and needed to eat gruel due to his shattered and broken jaw.

As stressful as the first three or four days were (we feared things were not going to change much), the days that have followed have shown Forrest make a miraculous recovery.  Forrest has gained weight, his jaw has been wired together, his vision has been returning as the days go on, a few days ago he started wagging his tail and has started being playful with me and his other owners.  He really likes taking car rides to the park, and getting in the water.  He belongs to a pack of four other dogs who he's gotten to know well.  He'll chase them when they run and he'll help them hunt squirrel while doing full on sprints in the park. He got neutered on Wednesday and was able to run around in less than 24 hours showing he's a very strong and healthy dog.  He's already proved he can bounce back from anything.

Unfortunately, the next ten weeks are going to be very stressful for him.  His heart-worm condition is pretty advanced and the Veterinarian will have to administer the aggressive procedure to cure him.  His activity will be severely limited while the heart-worms are exiting his blood stream.  He will spend a lot of sad time in his crate and will only be able to go outside to relieve himself.  Due to his advance heart-worm this is a necessity.  His liver and kidneys are not functioning normally and without the treatment it would most likely kill him.

After ten weeks Forrest will be normal, healthy, and happy.  He's already shown that he is a very loyal and loving being that only needed some tender loving care, something his previous owners had no capacity for.

A Story of Horror, A selfless act of Kindness.

On May 26th, 2004  Cyndi Marrs was awaken at 1:00 in the morning by a car's tires squealing past her bedroom window. She didn't think much of it at first, until the dog howls began. She was torn from her sleep by the most painful screams you could ever imagine an animal making. She didn't know what to think at first. So she dressed and went to check it out. What she found in the creek bed behind her house literally sickened her. There, lying about 15 feet below street level in the dry creek bed, was a 25 pound mixed breed puppy. All she saw was a dog's head covered in blood, sticking out of a black plastic garbage bag!

She did the first thing she could think of and called 911. The police arrived at her house in a matter of minutes and could not have been more helpful. After waiting for what seemed to be an eternity for Animal Control to show up, Cyndi, Vidal Cid, and I decided to rescue the dog ourselves. The police officer, whom we can not remember the name or ID of, went into the creek bed to retrieve the pup and placed him on a blanket in the back of his patrol car. We then followed him to the Central Texas Veterinary Surgery in south Austin .

At the hospital, we were informed that the pup had not been hit by a car. He had been beaten by his owner, probably with a bat or pipe. This dog has suffered head trauma and, as of now, is blind in both eyes. This may be solely due to the swelling in the brain, but could possibly be permanent. When he is not lying down, he is constantly circling to the left and is unable to walk straight.  The dog, which we have named Forrest, also has multiple jaw fractures and breaks. He has also tested positive for heartworms.

We really just wanted to inform the public that these events still happen. We never, in a million years, expected to wake up and have this happen in my our own back yard. We also wanted to inform the previous owner of this unfortunate pup that there were many options available to you if you truly did not want the animal and that animals are not put in this world for you to take out your anger on. We want to assure this person that Forrest DID live and will have a happy life with Vidal Cid who will care for him and who will make sure that he will never have to suffer again!

Thank you for all of your help and support for Forrest,

Forrest after finding love from his new Daddy
